The combination of fertile ground and the hot and very wet climate of Toamasina allowed a vast green forest to develop and created a rich ecosystem with more than a 90% level of endemism. Shaped by alleys and Creole houses, the port city abounds with a past full of history from the period of colonization. Within the city you can visit the port museum and the colourful local market named “Bazar Be”.
In the areas surrounding Toamasina, you can discover a unique and rich small circuit in the old coastal canal route (Pangalana). It is also possible to visit the oil palm plantation of Ivondro, an agro-tourism site or Foulpoint which is rich in fascinating history and diverse seaside activities such as fishing, bathing or a dugout excursion. The remote northern area is a nature-lover’s paradise with the Parks of Mananara Nord and the special reserve of Nosy Mangabe.
